Data for a grid that runs both ways

Metering, grid data and customer platforms for energy and water utilities, built for a network where homes now send power back as well as draw it.

What is changing

A utility used to read a meter once a quarter and send a bill. Now it receives readings every half hour from millions of devices, balances power flowing in both directions and serves customers who generate their own. Most of the systems underneath were designed for the old rhythm.

Smart meters, heat pumps, home batteries and electric vehicles have multiplied the data a utility handles, and the decisions it has to make with that data.

Regulators and customers expect clearer bills, faster connections and honest reporting on the transition. All of it depends on systems that can change without any risk to supply.

Three shifts reshaping utilities

  • Readings by the half hour

Interval data from smart meters has grown volumes a hundredfold. Billing, settlement and forecasting all have to keep pace with it.

  • Customers who produce

Solar panels and batteries turn customers into suppliers. Tariffs, contracts and bills have to handle exports as easily as imports.

  • Connections at scale

Requests to connect new generation and charging points far exceed what manual planning can process. Grid data has to be trusted enough to automate the first answer.

What we do

How we help energy and water utilities

We work on the systems between the meter and the bill, and between the grid and the planner, and we change them without touching supply.

  • Meter data platforms

Platforms that take in, validate and store interval readings from millions of meters, and hand them on to every system that needs them.

    Cloud and platform engineering
  • Billing and customer platforms

Billing that handles time-of-use tariffs, exports and prepayment, and customer accounts people can understand.

    Enterprise platforms
  • Grid and asset data

A trusted model of the network, joined to the condition of every asset, so planners can see load and risk on one map.

    Artificial intelligence and data
  • Connections and flexibility

Self-service connection requests and flexibility services that give installers and customers an answer in days rather than months.

    Digital product engineering
  • Operational technology security

Control systems and substations protected as carefully as the office network, and tested the way an attacker would approach them.

    Cybersecurity
  • Carbon reporting

Emissions data handled with the same rigor as financial data, and the energy cost of your own software measured too.

Metering

Leaving the mainframe without dropping a reading

Varda Energy's meter data ran on a mainframe that had served it for decades. Every half-hourly reading from two million meters had to keep arriving, and every bill had to stay right, while it moved.

We built the new platform beside the old one and fed both the same readings for months. Each night the two were compared. When they had agreed for long enough, the old one was switched off. Customers noticed nothing.

Grid data

Grid data that planners trust

A connection request is only as fast as the network model behind it. In most utilities that model lives in several places, and none of them agree on what is in the ground.

We reconcile the network records with meter and sensor data, flag where they disagree and give planners one model they can rely on. Simple connection requests can then be answered automatically, and engineers spend their time on the hard ones.

Our leaders

Energy and utilities leads

Engineers who have worked in control rooms and billing teams, and know what a missed reading costs.

  • Lars Eriksen

    Industry Lead, Energy and Utilities

Has spent eighteen years on metering and settlement systems. Led the Varda Energy program from its first workshop.

  • Ngozi Adeyemi

    Grid Data Lead

Builds network models planners can trust, and the automation that answers connection requests from them.

  • Carmen Ruiz

    Customer Platforms Lead

Works on billing and customer accounts for tariffs that change by the half hour.
